We have all talked at length about the process of filing your income tax return, along with its importance and benefits. But how many of you know that for online filing, just filling the form and attaching required documents is not the end of the process.

There is another step left in the entire process, and it could just be the most vital step. Filing your online income tax return is not complete without getting it verified by the Income Tax Department.

Need To Get Acknowledgment on Return Verified

To get this done, you must send the acknowledgment that you receive after filing your online income tax return to the IT departments Bengaluru address. Once the filing is done, you must download the acknowledgment and send it by either speed post or ordinary post.

And if you are downloading the acknowledgment from the IT Department’s website, then you will need a password to open it. By default, the password to open this acknowledgment, also known as the ITR-V form, is your PAN number written in lower case, followed by your date of birth.

It has to be remembered that the acknowledgment has to be sent to the Centralized Processing Centre (CPC), IT Department in Bengaluru within 120 days of filing your online income tax return. It should be addressed Centralized Processing Center, Income Tax Department, Bengaluru 560500.

This is a unique pin code that has been assigned to the CPC by the Department of Post. This is the address that taxpayers have to send not only their ITR-V forms but any other documents which need to be verified by the department. The address is:

Post Bag No.1,

Electronic City Post Office,

Bengaluru, Karnataka 560100

Example

Just to get a better idea, let’s take an example. Supposed John has finished filing his online income tax return; the last step is for him to download the ITR-V form/acknowledgment provided by the IT Department, and open it. But opening it requires his PAN details and date of birth.

Suppose his PAN number is AGH56YP8, and his date of birth is 14/06/1979, then the password to open the ITR-V form will be agh56yp814061979.

What Is An ITR-V Form?

It is a one-page document that can be downloaded and has to be signed in blue ink for sending to the Bengaluru office as verification that you have done your online income tax return filing. It is the only document that facilitates this process, without which the return will not be processed by the Income Tax Department, and cannot be couriered. You do not need to attach any other document with this form when posting it.

But There Is a Catch Here

This does not mean that anyone who has filed their online income tax return has to send the acknowledgment by post. Those who did the e-verification of their income tax return via net banking, bank account, aadhaar OTP, demat account number, bank PIN, mobile number or email do not have to send this ITV-R form to the Bengaluru office. Only those who have not had their online income tax return verified by any of these modes have to send it for verification.

How Will You Know If The Acknowledgment Has Reached The Bengaluru Office?

The Bengaluru office generally sends out emails once they receive the ITR-V forms. It normally arrives 4-5 days after the acknowledgment has been sent to the ‘Garden City’. There are some online mechanisms as well that help you check the status, with the online government portal being www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in. Suppose you still haven’t received any receipt from the office confirming that your ITV-R form has reached, then you can call on the government of India’s toll-free number: 1800-425-2229, which s available in between 9 am and 8 pm.

Why Go Through All This If Return Can Be Filed Manually?

You must be wondering why take all this trouble if you can just file your income tax return manually on a physical form and send it to the IT authorities, without worrying about getting it verified by the office in Bengaluru? Here are some benefits of online income tax return filing:

  1. It makes the process quicker and facilitates smooth and seamless transactions.

  2. You can file online income tax return anytime, and from anywhere, at your convenience.

  3. It prevents errors as the online platforms contain software that helps eradicate as many mistakes as possible.

  4. It is safer, as paper filing is prone to tampering and changing.

  5. In keeping with the environment-friendly pledges of organizations, online income tax return filing helps save on paper, thus reducing dependence on nature.

There is no good or bad to doing online income tax return filing, and the same goes for paper filing. It depends on the taxpayer, for the ultimate objective is to get back money that belongs to him/her.
